A set of four ‘Mount’ dining chairs designed by Paul Matt for Brynmawr circa 1930s. The golden oak chair frames have a lattice back, lightly chamfered legs and drop in seats. They have been newly upholstered.
Paul Matt was the son of a German cabinet maker who moved to Wales in the late 1920s to found the Brynmawr Furniture Makers Ltd in an attempt to relieve the high levels of work in the area.
The company ceased trading ceased in 1940 and existing pieces from the Brynmawr workshop are reasonably scarce.
Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and by Art Deco, he designed simple but well made furniture that could be constructed with ease by relatively unskilled workers.
Chairs are in good condition, some surface wear and tear commensurate with age and use.
